Overweight Teenagers
May 2, 2008
It is an unfortunate fact that overweight teenagers usually grow into overweight adults; early intervention can avoid tragic health problems for them in the future including any academic success they may aspire too. Teens more than adults need that self confidence which normally comes with age and it doesn’t take much to undermine what little self-esteem they do have. Teen weight loss programs are being used to teach them about the health issues involved including how it affects their attitude towards themselves and others.
These weight problems can accompany them throughout their entire lives and range from serious mental to physical health problems, sometimes both. Just some of the health problems they might experience are:
- Heart conditions
- Blood and circulatory conditions
- Type 2 diabetes
- Aching joints
Almost any teen weight loss regime can help lower the chances of these problems in the future. Mentally, the repercussions are probably more obvious because who doesn’t remember an overweight child at school that got saddled with some of those awful nicknames like fatty, piggy, porky and tubby plus many more that were even less courteous.
Even if they are able to get over their weight problem, the chances are that insulting names gained at school may follow them into adulthood which can be another blow to their morale and self image. Parents with teens that need to lose weight are not alone with many groups available to help them because it can be difficult to know how to deal with the situation. Overweight children and teens are now a global problem even in the developing world and a whole global industry has grown up around this with diet plans that are often not worth the paper they are printed on; but, that is not to say that all diets do not work.
Teen weight loss programs to look for are those that promote the reduction of fat both in the diet and that contained in the body which also happens to be the key to long term weight control. Many children become worried if their parents show too much concern as they have not noticed that they have been getting steadily heavier over a period of time but the situation cannot be rectified overnight either. A parent should contact their doctor in addition to researching the subject for information specifically relating to teen weight loss programs (like fat loss 4 idiots) that are proven methods; The first thing to do is speak to a professional who specializes in teen weight loss and carry out some research on your own; ]
One word of warning about certain teen weight loss programs; if not chosen carefully they can have serious health consequences in themselves. Many of these are crash diet programs which use starvation as the weight loss method but often these are the cause of other health problems. Before you make a decision, look at weight loss methods that focus on reducing the amount of fat in the body as this is the key to long term weight management.
